All you seem to hear and read these days is advice about how important it is to stay healthy by eating the right food and including a certain amount of exercise in your life. Easier said than done though, because with the wide range of choices available in the gastronomic department, we are more concerned with keeping our taste buds happy and our stomachs satiated than with bothering about our health and longevity.
But no matter what the temptation, it is important to eat healthy food because:
It helps us to remain free from disease: It’s ironic that even with all the advances we have made in the field of medicine, disease has become more prevalent today because of the significant changes we have made in our lifestyles. We are less active, we eat more fatty and unhealthy foods, and we do not exercise if we can help it. Not eating enough healthy food and eating too much of the wrong kind can bring on diseases like diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, cardiac arrest, strokes, obesity, osteoporosis and many others.
It keeps us slim: When we eat healthy, we don’t have to fight a constant battle to remain slim. It’s easier to keep an eye on the bathroom scale and feel good about ourselves if we do not go overboard in the food department.
Our body needs the nutrients: We need the right amount of proteins, carbohydrates and fats in balanced proportions to ensure that our body functions normally and with enough energy. Eating the right food in the right amounts helps keep us both mentally and physically fit.
It helps fight diseases: If you are already beset by diseases like diabetes and cholesterol, watching your diet and eating healthy food can help you manage your disease and help keep it under control. You also save yourself from related illnesses like heart attacks and strokes.
It keeps us strong: When we eat food that’s good for our body, our teeth and bones are strong and our hair is shiny and healthy. When bones and muscles are well developed, we are more flexible and balanced as we get older, and this keeps us safe from accidental falls that could hurt us badly.
It’s true that we are what we eat, so watch what you put in your mouth, because your very life depends on it.
